Whole Tone Scale

The whole tone scale is a six-note symmetrical collection in which every adjacent note is separated by a whole tone.

Developing reference

Overview

Equal spacing gives every scale degree the same local interval pattern. In twelve-tone equal temperament there are only two distinct whole tone collections before transposition reproduces the same pitch content.

Construction

Beginning from any note, move repeatedly by two semitones until the octave is reached. Because no semitone or perfect-fifth relationship singles out a tonic, tonal centre must be established through context and emphasis.

Characteristics

The scale contains augmented triads and lacks a perfect fifth above any chosen tonic. Its symmetry can create an open, floating, or unresolved effect, though the result depends on voicing, register, rhythm, and surrounding harmony.

Applications

Whole tone material can connect augmented chords, colour dominant harmony, create symmetrical melodic sequences, and interrupt more strongly tonal collections. Its regular layout also makes transposition and pattern comparison especially clear.
